WEBE Wellness: What You Need To Know About Sunscreen

After an overcast weekend, the sun is back out – and as we spend more time outside in the sunshine, we need to protect ourselves with sunscreen.

But a lot of questions come into Google about sunscreen. Here’s what most people search for:

How long it lasts – if it’s more than 3 years old, you should buy a new bottle. But if it’s still good, reapply every two hours, and more often if you’re in the water.

How it works – there are chemicals within that reflect the sun’s harmful UV rays, and there are other chemicals that absorb them. Both ways prevent it from hitting your skin.

Where did it come from – scientists started in the 30s, and the first one had an SPF of just 2! By the 70s, we reached SPF 15, and it became waterproof by the end of the 70s.

• And what’s the best sunscreen? According to this year’s annual Consumer Reports ranking, Walmart’s Equate Sport Lotion – with an SPF of 50 – is your best bet.

Make sure to take care of yourself so you can have the best summer ever!
