The Rallye for Pancreatic Cancer is organized by an all-volunteer committee led by Mark Schlegel, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April of 2015. The goal of this 501(c)(3) non-profit is to increase awareness of pancreatic cancer and help fund research for an early detection test to diagnose this disease. All proceeds support a landmark pancreatic cancer research study being led by Dr. Richard Frank, a hematologist/oncologist and the Director of Clinical Cancer Research at the WCHN Biomedical Research Institute in Danbury and Norwalk Hospital’s Whittingham Cancer Center. To date, Rallye for Pancreatic Cancer has contributed over $215,000 to Dr. Frank’s study.
Pancreatic cancer is the only cancer without an early screening method for detection. Few symptoms appear until the latest stages of pancreatic cancer and diagnosis is usually made at Stage 3 or stage 4. Connecticut and New York currently rank in the top 5 states in pancreatic cancer cases in the U.S.
As an all volunteer non-profit organization, every dollar collected by the Rallye for Pancreatic Cancer goes to the research for early detection of pancreatic cancer. Admission is free for spectators but donations are gratefully accepted.
