About Children’s Tumor Foundation
The Children’s Tumor Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to finding effective treatments for the millions of people worldwide living with neurofibromatosis (NF), a term for three distinct disorders: NF1, NF2, and schwannomatosis. NF causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body and may lead to blindness, deafness, bone abnormalities, disfigurement, learning disabilities, disabling pain, and cancer. NF affects one in every 3,000 people, more than cystic fibrosis, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and Huntington’s disease combined. The Children’s Tumor Foundation funds critical research into neurofibromatosis. In addition to benefiting those who live with NF, this research is shedding new light on several forms of cancer, brain tumors, bone abnormalities, and learning disabilities, ultimately benefiting the broader community. For more information, please visit www.ctf.org.

Southbury, CT  — On Sunday August 25, 2019 at 4PM Leo’s Restaurant of Southbury is hosting its 5th annual Pie Eating contest in honor of local 6-year old, Alex Owens.  Alex suffers from inoperable tumors on his brain, back, stomach and arm due to a rare genetic disease called neurofibromatosis (NF).  NF is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body and affects one in every 3,000 people. Currently there is no cure or effective treatment for NF. Leo’s Restaurant owners Rose Leo and Bob & Michelle Moniz were inspired to organize this event when they learned of Alex’s struggles.  All proceeds will be donated to the Children’s Tumor Foundation (CTF), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to end neurofibromatosis through research.

Despite his challenges, Alex is a very happy boy.  He plays soccer and t-ball locally, and enjoys playdates with his PES classmates.  Alex has a special relationship with the Leo-Moniz family, so much that as an infant, he said, “Bob” before “Mama”!

“It’s an honor to host this event each year.  Pulling the community together and knowing we can help offer Alex a more comfortable future is important to our family” says Bob Moniz.  “We just love seeing his smile.”  For the past 4 years Bob has personally burned the midnight oil freshly baking blueberry and apple pies to perfection the night before the event.  Since its inception, the event has raised approximately $10,000 and drawn in local legends from our Southbury PD, EMS, Representative Arthur O’Neill and Dr. Ruby Corby-O’Neill, and Sacred Heart pastor Monsignor Joseph Donnelly.

For those not interested in eating, the event includes other family-friendly activities such as face-painting and hair chalking.  This year there will be fabulous raffle prizes donated from local businesses, and special offers from local small business owners.  Alex’s mother Diane works with Bob to organize the event.  She had this to say, “I can’t believe we’re on our 5th year of this contest!  Each year we try to grow the event by including more of the community and this year will be particularly special as our prize packs and chance auction items are valued in the hundreds of dollars.  The support we receive from our amazing area residents, businesses, first responders and public servants is humbling.  We love this town.”

There are 3 categories of pie-eating competition and each receives its own prize pack:  Children, Men and Women.   Registration is $20 per adult and $15 per child, however participants can save $5 per person if they pre-register https://join.ctf.org/event/leos-pie-eating-contest-2019/e243702  There will be a limited number of pies available for those registering the day of the event.  Attendance is free.
